Managing Bleeding
- Bite down firmly on the provided gauze immediately after surgery to control bleeding.
- Keep pressure on the area until bleeding slows or stops.
- Some bleeding is normal. Replace gauze as needed until it subsides.
Important Safety Notes (Especially for Children)
- Children should be closely supervised to avoid biting or chewing their lips, cheeks, or tongue while numb.
Medications
- Fill and take all prescribed medications as directed.
- Pain Medication Warning: If prescribed stronger pain medication (beyond aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen), do not:
- Drive
- Operate machinery
- Perform tasks requiring alertness
- Antibiotics, if prescribed, should be taken exactly as directed to prevent infection.
Swelling Management
- Swelling is normal and may peak 3-4 days after surgery.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face:
- 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
- Always place a cloth between the ice and your skin
- After 72 hours, switch to moist heat to help reduce swelling.
First 24 Hours – What to Avoid
Do not:
- Brush near the surgical site
- Rinse, spit, or smoke
- Drink alcohol or carbonated beverages
- Eat hot or spicy foods
Additional Precautions
- Do not use straws for 1 week (to prevent excessive bleeding).
- Limit physical activity on the day of surgery. Resume normal activity the next day as tolerated.
Oral Hygiene After 24 Hours
- Begin gentle rinsing with warm salt water:
- Mix ½ teaspoon salt in 8 oz of water
- Rinse 3 times daily
Diet Recommendations
- Stick to soft foods and liquids for the first few days:
- Soups
- Yogurt
- Smoothies
- Juice
Sutures (Stitches)
- Most sutures will dissolve on their own within 7–10 days.
- If removal is required, you will be informed at your appointment.
When to Contact Our Office
Call us if you experience:
- Severe or worsening pain
- Excessive bleeding
- Significant swelling
- Any concerns or questions
Emergency Care:
- Call our office for urgent issues
- For life-threatening emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room
